Did I ever tell you…
- February 21, 2012
Did I ever tell you guys that I wrote the riff to “Cruel” awaiting a redeye back to NYC at a near-deserted Jetblue terminal in Salt Lake City after a weekend at Sundance? I had found an out of the way nook and pulled out my guitar (cause no one wants to be “that guy” at an airport…) when Daryl Hannah* came and sat nearby. As I was quietly playing, she tapped her toes, looked over, and smiled supportively a few times. I naturally took this to mean, “keep at it, kid. That riff’s got legs! You’re sure working on a winner!” So, I think it’s pretty safe to say, “Cruel” has the tacit blessing (or, hell, full on glowing endorsement) of the illustrious star of “Blade Runner” & “Splash.” And I’d like personally thank Ms. Hannah for showing that modicum of enthusiasm. Without it, maybe that riff would have been lost, discarded, or ended up in riff heaven too soon.
*full disclosure: there’s at least a 37% chance this person was NOT, in fact, Daryl Hannah.
Y.C.
Haha! Oh but it will be Daryl Hannah in your biopic.

That’s an awesome story. I laughed so hard at the end.
How did you come up with 37%?

The elevation and hole in the atmosphere directly above Utah allows some artists to tap into heightened abilities. If their open enough to receive them of course. Sounds like you were and I sound like a lunatic.

This was a really warm and sweet story, I laughed my ass off, a little.
Today I chuckled to myself in front of my entire office at the thought of geeking out on you should the fortunate opportunity of running into you at a gallery or show arise.

Darryl Hannah rules. Great in Kill Bill and in Dancing at the Blue Igauna. Have you ever heard that she escaped an attempted kidnapping by climbing out a bathroom window? Now that’s some hysterical strength! Great story. P.S. I’m a veteran of the JetBlue red eye. Can’t wait to see St. Vincent again. What a @#$%^ rush!

Oh Annie, did you spend too much time getting taken care of by a nannie? You refer to “guys”, so you’re content with the fact that these desperate idiot men listen to you for the sole purpose of you know what?

Now, now Shitcent. I happen to be one of those “guys” and you know what? I’m a woman. Great show last night. Black Rainbow was truly providential. Thank you Annie & CONGRATS on being voted to SPIN’S top 100 guitarists of all time!
